FAQ – Our Breeding Water

One of the most frequently asked questions is what water parameters we use to breed our discus fish and how we prepare our breeding water.
Since stable water parameters are crucial for successful discus breeding, we would like to give you an insight into our daily practice.

Source Water

We exclusively use osmosis water as the basis for our breeding water.

This allows us to set the water parameters precisely and reproducibly and avoid undesirable fluctuations.


Our Hardening per 100 Liters of Water

For 100 liters of breeding water, we use:

With this combination, we achieve approximately the following water parameters:

  • Conductivity: approx. 270 µS
  • General Hardness (GH): approx. 3
  • Carbonate Hardness (KH): approx. 1

These water parameters have proven to be very stable and reliable for our discus breeding over a long period.


Temperature in the Breeding Facility

Our breeding tanks operate at a temperature of approx. 27 °C.

This temperature has proven optimal for:

  • breeding pairs
  • eggs
  • larvae
  • and fry

Oxygen Supply

Our breeding tanks are heavily aerated to achieve the highest possible oxygen saturation in the water.

Good oxygen supply plays a very important role, especially with:

  • high feeding,
  • fry rearing
  • and the general health of the discus fish

Water Changes

We change approx. 30% of the breeding water weekly.

Regular water changes ensure:

  • stable water parameters,
  • low germ load,
  • better development of the fry
  • and healthy breeding conditions.

Discus fish are particularly sensitive to strong fluctuations in water parameters.
Therefore, we rely on a simple, stable, and reproducible system.
